We stayed in Dubrovnik just long enough to decide we need to go back. Then we got on a ferry and headed to Split. The 2nd largest city in Croatia was still a surprise when we spotted it from the sea. We had passed the small towns of Korcula and Hvar, which were nestled behind walls near coves. But Split sprawled out before us with a festive waterfront, and a barely visible old wall housing the Roman emperor Diocletian's palace. We settled into the new apartment and quickly made our way down to the waterfront. Ice cream was abundant, and Rob's eyes lit up at every stop, so we had to try some. Mmmm cherry yogurt gelato. Mm. :o9
The old town in Split is mostly within the walls of Diocletian's Palace, built around 300 A.D. Restaurants, shops, museums, and ruins fill the expansive space within the palace walls. Many thanks to Steve and Anna for recommending a tasty dinner for us at Konoba Trattoria. Brujet (fish stew over polenta), seafood spaghetti, zucchini pasta, and a fresh cheese platter filled our stomachs quite happily. And of course we topped off the day with a trip to the Slasticarna (ice cream shop!).
